“Geography explains the past, illuminates the present and prepares us for the future. What could be more important than that?” - Michael Palin
At St. John’s we encourage children to use Geography as an open door to the wider world. We develop a curiosity within our pupils, about the wider world and the citizens in it. Our geography curriculum inspires children to look closely at the world around them and develop the skills necessary to be able to interpret what they see.
We seek to build upon the child’s “personal geography” by developing locational knowledge, place knowledge, human and physical geography and geographical skills and fieldwork, starting with them and their immediate locality before branching out and examining the national and international world.
Inclusion and SEND: Our curriculum is fully inclusive. Teachers make reasonable adjustments so that pupils with SEND can access and achieve in lessons. Strategies may include scaffolded tasks, pre‑teaching of vocabulary, adapted resources, visual supports, assistive technology and targeted adult support, in line with our SEND Policy and pupils’ support plans.
Finding out more: Parents/carers can request further information about our curriculum by contacting the subject leader via the school office. Long‑term plans and progression documents are available to view on this page.
Our curriculum follows the National Curriculum for Key Stages 1 and 2 and is sequenced to build knowledge and skills over time.
