Vision
At St John’s everything we do is underpinned by our 3 Christian Values:
Love, Courage, Perseverance
“To have another language is to possess a second soul.”
— Charlemagne
At St John’s, we believe that learning a language opens doors to the wider world. Our French curriculum, taught from Year 3 to Year 6, is based on the Kapow Primary condensed scheme, which provides a rigorous and engaging foundation in phonics, vocabulary, grammar, and cultural awareness.
Children learn to listen, speak, read, and write in French through a spiral curriculum that builds progressively on prior knowledge. Each unit is carefully sequenced to develop confidence and fluency, with opportunities for role-play, conversation, and creative expression. Pupils become language detectives, using strategies to decode meaning and make connections between French and English.
Our vision is to nurture curious, confident communicators who appreciate the richness of other cultures and are inspired to become global citizens. French is taught regularly over Key Stage 2, with four units per year, ensuring depth and progression.

Inclusion and SEND: Our curriculum is fully inclusive. Teachers make reasonable adjustments so that pupils with SEND can access and achieve in lessons. Strategies may include scaffolded tasks, pre‑teaching of vocabulary, adapted resources, visual supports, assistive technology and targeted adult support, in line with our SEND Policy and pupils’ support plans.
Finding out more: Parents/carers can request further information about our curriculum by contacting the subject leader via the school office. Long‑term plans and progression documents are available to view on this page.
Our curriculum follows the National Curriculum for Key Stages 1 and 2 and is sequenced to build knowledge and skills over time.
