“Mathematics has beauty and romance. It’s not a boring place to be, the mathematical world. It’s an extraordinary place; it’s worth spending time there.” - Marcus du Sautoy
Here at St John’s, we strive to inspire confident mathematicians who are not only fluent in number but have the necessary skills to approach and reason through rich and varied mathematical problems with self-belief. We are committed to fostering proficiency within number; children who understand the rudiments of number and can explain ‘why’ when unpacking new concepts and consolidating the old. Children will learn that maths is essential to everyday life and a fundamental practice necessary across all forms of employment, beginning to form strong connections in number to ensure concrete understanding. Children will be taught to apply their maths to solve real problems requiring critical thinking and in turn develop a genuine curiosity and love for maths that will empower and assist throughout their career in education and beyond.
At St John’s, we work with NCETM Maths Hubs to further develop our offer. With the expert guidance of the Maths Hub, we aim to expand and improve the subject knowledge of our teaching staff and continually advance our pedagogical approach. We strive to achieve the best for our children and community and our new network of maths experts will ensure the delivery of high-quality education that is current and effective. We use the NCETM's Curriculum Prioritisation materials to deliver our curriculum.
Inclusion and SEND: Our curriculum is fully inclusive. Teachers make reasonable adjustments so that pupils with SEND can access and achieve in lessons. Strategies may include scaffolded tasks, pre‑teaching of vocabulary, adapted resources, visual supports, assistive technology and targeted adult support, in line with our SEND Policy and pupils’ support plans.
Finding out more: Parents/carers can request further information about our curriculum by contacting the subject leader via the school office. Long‑term plans and progression documents are available to view on this page.
Our curriculum follows the National Curriculum for Key Stages 1 and 2 and is sequenced to build knowledge and skills over time.
