Music Subject Lead

“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” – Plato

At St John’s Primary School, we believe music lessons should be lively, interactive, and accessible for children of all abilities. We recognise the power that music has to change lives. Above all, through our curriculum, we aim to boost every child’s sense of confidence and self-belief; transformative traits we hope will remain with them throughout their lives. We focus on performing, listening, composing and the history of music to ensure our pupils have a solid foundation of musical understanding and appreciation. In addition, our cyclical curriculum weaves the nine interrelated dimensions of music across all lessons. Through the wider opportunities that we provide, our pupils are immersed in a range of different experiences to foster a love and appreciation of music.

Inclusion and SEND: Our curriculum is fully inclusive. Teachers make reasonable adjustments so that pupils with SEND can access and achieve in lessons. Strategies may include scaffolded tasks, pre‑teaching of vocabulary, adapted resources, visual supports, assistive technology and targeted adult support, in line with our SEND Policy and pupils’ support plans.

Finding out more: Parents/carers can request further information about our curriculum by contacting the subject leader via the school office. Long‑term plans and progression documents are available to view on this page.

Our curriculum follows the National Curriculum for Key Stages 1 and 2 and is sequenced to build knowledge and skills over time.
